Honda City v/s Maruti Ciaz

Honda City is synonymous with the name ‘sedan’ in India. It is still the only sedan in the top 10 cars sold in India. Is the new Maruti Suzuki Ciaz competitive enough to give a stiff and solid competition to the Honda City? Let us see:

Maruti Suzuki’s mid-sized sedan Ciaz has managed to race to the top spot in its segment (A3+) this year. Numbers show that the Ciaz has sold 53,644 units from April 2016 to January 2017,which is 19 per cent higher than its closest competitor Honda City.

Maruti Ciaz

In fact, Maruti Suzuki has managed to grow its market share in the segment from 29.1 per cent in Financial Year 2016 to 41.2 per cent in Financial Year 2017 riding on the Ciaz. Interestingly, in January Ciaz is the only car in its segment that has shown growth in sales during January, reporting a 20.2 per cent growth when its competitor Honda City showed a drop in sales. Honda City sales have fallen by 21 per cent in January.

Maruti, on average, sells over 5,500 units of the Ciaz every month. In comparison, the City’s monthly sales average is around 5,000 units a month. This, even after the increase in sales witnessed after the launch of the facelift. The success of the Ciaz can be attributed to its spacious cabin, frugal engines and the significantly lower price tag. Also, the City’s build quality has suffered since the introduction of the current model. Yet the fourth generation Honda City has sold over 2,00,000 copies in India. But with the Ciaz gaining momentum, the City seems to have already lost out to Maruti’s contender. Also, the initial buzz around the new 2017 City seems to fading fast. After a considerable drop in numbers in March, the Ciaz has once again re-claimed the lost territory in April’17 as the numbers given in the table below:

The Honda City has a wide chrome strip that runs between the headlights with the very prominent, on the front profile. Honda’s new design philosophy of wing face is very evident in the sedan.A lot of angular designing has been implemented throughout the car, from the sharp looking front bumper to the headlamp design, which is split into three sections which include the blinkers, high and low beam lights. The taillamp is sleek and is split between the rear boot lid and back of the car. The side profile, has not changed much from the older variants, however, the muscular wheel arches give you the feeling of a solid sedan.

Honda City

The Ciaz has an all-new design by Maruti which is completely unlike their previous sedans. The front fascia is elegant with lines and angles running smoothly. The Ciaz is a larger looking car in comparison to the Honda City, this confirms the idea promoted by the manufacturer for a bigger, roomier car, thus, the exterior gives you the impression of a large sedan. On the rear profile, the taillamps suggest that it has taken a cue from one of the competitors and given it a final touch to separate it from others. However, the designing is classy and gives a very sedan-like feel. The side profile is very elegant and shows that you have a lot of space inside the cabin

Both the cars have got very attractive looks which will definitely attract the prospective buyers. Honda City has got a sleek and stylish look whereas Ciaz has got a bold and muscle look. Both the cars have got chrome accents on the grille which make them look more premium. The Ciaz has got projector lamps whereas the City has got LED lights with Day Time Running Lamps(DRL’s). The cars, also, have got very upmarket interiors but in overall plastic quality, Ciaz has an edge over the City.

The Ciaz is really very fuel efficient. The Petrol model returns up to 20.73 KMPL with Manual Transmission. Its Automatic Petrol model offers 19.2 KMPL. The Diesel model offers 28.09 KMPL. The Ciaz Diesel is the most fuel efficient car in the country. The new Honda City returns up to 17.40 KMPL on the Petrol Manual and 18 KMPL on the Petrol Automatic. The City Diesel offers a mileage of up to 25.6 KMPL. All diesel variants of Ciaz come with hybrid technology to boost the fuel efficiency of the car. Though on paper, the Honda City clearly has more power, clever power delivery and gearing on the Maruti Ciaz means the difference is not that evident in on-road performance. The diesel Ciaz is also faster to a 100kmph than the City. Ciaz feels more stable on the highway as compared to City on triple digit speeds.

Model Mileage (ARAI-certified)
Maruti Ciaz
  • Petrol Manual – 20.73 KMPL
  • Petrol Automatic – 19.12 KMPL
  • Diesel Manual – 28.09 KMPL
Honda City
  • Petrol Manual – 17.40 KMPL
  • Petrol Automatic – 18.00 KMPL
  • Diesel Manual – 25.6 KMPL

The Ciaz has better high speed characteristics and feels more planted on highways while the City might tend to roll and pitch a little bit. Cabin insulation is also very good on the Ciaz and the suspension operates noiselessly. The City though, has a sharper steering that offers more in terms of feedback.

Features-wise, the City edges ahead thanks to the recent updates. It gets LED headlamps, LED daytime running lamps, LED taillamps which the Ciaz’s features list does not include. However, both get leather seats, climate control, rear air-con vents, steering-mounted audio and telephone buttons, touchscreens, keyless go, rear-view cameras (though the City does without sensors) and dual airbags. The top of the line variant of the City also features a sunroof, cruise control and paddle shifters for the automatic variant. Except for additional features like cruise control and a sunroof on the top-end City, both cars are identical in terms of features offered.

The Honda City features are good and unique with the Chrome front grille, garnish for the rear license plate, VX gets the electric sunroof, alloy wheels, chrome outer door handles, turn indicators on ORVM, push start/stop button, most importantly – the paddle shift and electrically foldable ORVMs, keyless boot door opener, rear reading and map lights, leather seats, these are not seen in the SV variant.

Maruti Ciaz includes projector headlamps, alloy wheels, chrome front grille across all variants, turn indicators on ORVM on both the variant, push start/stop on Zxi only, auto AC, second row AC vents, footwell lamps for the Zxi, electric boot door opener on both variants, as for the audio system, the Ciaz lacks the touch screen infotainment system, however, it does come with BlueTooth connectivity.

As for the safety features, both the Honda City variants (SV & VX) come with dual airbags and ABS with EBD, auto door lock by speed and a whole lot of minor details like immobilizer, security alarm, and driver seatbelt reminder.

The Maruti Ciaz offers dual airbags, ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors and camera, and a whole lot of small yet good features like the immobilizer, seat belt reminder, security alarm, auto day/night.

These safety features are there in most of the cars these days but they don’t really ensure the security of the car itself. But, that should not be a concern now too with the introduction of CAR KNIGHT in the market. Car Knight allows the car to be parked anywhere without the worry of its theft, all with the power of your finger impressions. A compact device, that unlocks the engine of the car only when one gives the recorded fingerprint (one can recored upto 150 fingerprints) or a 4-digit PIN that one sets according to one’s convenience. The product also has a valet mode that disables the device when you lend your car for parking in valet, or to someone on temporary basis but do no wish to reveal the code. It can be enabled again on entering the PIN. The product has been conceptualised by FATE INDIA, and is available only at selected dealers or on order basis currently at http://www.fateindia.com/
